Spotlight: redondo beach

|

In 1887, the Los Angeles Daily Herald described Redondo Beach as “The Gem Of The Continent”–a sentiment that holds true more than 100 years later. From “RAT Beach” all the way up to the South Redondo/Hermosa Beach border on Herondo Street, thousands of beachgoers can be seen surfing, jogging, skateboarding, biking, rollerblading, playing volleyball, or just relaxing on the sand. North Redondo, while mostly residential, is also home to some of the city’s biggest attractions, including the South Bay Galleria shopping center and the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center.

With all of these offerings, it is no wonder that Money Magazine ranks communities in Redondo Beach as some of the most expensive places to live in the United States. It should also be no surprise, then, that the City of Redondo Beach takes pride in its reputation, the safety of its citizens and guests being the biggest contributor. This is, in large part, due to the presence of both the Redondo Beach City Prosecutor’s Office and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Redondo Beach City Prosecutor’s Office

Redondo Beach City Prosecutor Melanie Chavira replaced Brenda Coe just over two years ago. Ms. Chavira formerly served as an assistant supervisor in the criminal division of the Los Angeles City Prosecutor’s Office, where she made headline news when she prosecuted actress Lindsay Lohan in connection with the theft of a necklace.

The Redondo Beach City Prosecutor’s Office handles all misdemeanor offenses that originate within the City of Redondo Beach. A misdemeanor is a crime punishable by a maximum confinement of one year in county jail. Misdemeanors also carry fines, commonly a maximum fine of $1,000.00. Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office

The L.A. County D.A.’s Office operates throughout L.A. County and is comprised of hundreds of different prosecutors at any given time. Matters that come through Redondo Beach are typically resolved through the Torrance Courthouse located at 825 Maple Avenue, Torrance, CA 90503.

A felony is a crime punishable by minimum confinement of one year in state prison. Felonies are commonly also punished by fines and formal, supervised probation. In California, felonies are categorized as either White Collar Felonies, Drug Felonies, Sex Felonies, or Violent and Serious Felonies. You can find out more information regarding these various types of felonies here.
