John Alexander Mendoza, who was 58 years old, used to work at the law firm of Perona, Langer, Beck, Serbin, Mendoza and Harrison in the neighborhood of Bixby Knolls in Long Beach. Mendoza was let go recently by the firm and was extremely upset by it. John Mendoza came back on Friday during the firm’s company holiday party and shot at his colleagues of more than 10 years. Major A. Langer, 75, and Ronald Beck, 64, ran the day to day operations at the firm and were both injured. Langer was killed at the initial scene and Beck was injured in the leg and taken to Long Beach Memorial Center. Once Mendoza was done shooting his intended targets, he killed himself. Beck had to undergo surgery and is reportedly to be released this coming Saturday. Major A. Langer was described as a “brilliant, caring person” by his colleagues and friends and they also said that he “did not deserve this.” One of his colleagues said that Langer built the firm from the ground up and worked in the areas of criminal and personal injury. They also went on to say that Langer had “a heart of gold and considered everyone in the firm family.” Langer was married and had both children and grandchildren.
It is still unclear as to why Mendoza was let go from the firm and the police are still investigating the motive for the shooting. Colleagues of both Major A. Langer and Ronald Beck have stated that John Mendoza was extremely religious and didn’t even like anyone using foul language when he was present. A partner from the firm, Todd Harrison, released a statement where he addressed the situation and said that on behalf of the firm they would like to “extend their deepest condolences” and “their thoughts and prayers are with the family of Major A. Langer, as well as with the family of Ronald Beck.”
