San Pedro Young Woman Remains in Critical Condition After Being Struck by Drunk Driver in Redondo Beach

|

A young man by the name of Jossy Patrick Avalos, who is 24 years old and a Carson resident, was allegedly driving under the influence when he crashed into an Uber car in Redondo Beach that had two passengers in the back seat. The passengers included Ashley Elizabeth Murray and her male friend. Murray is 21-year-old graduate of San Pedro High School. She was currently back home from the University of Arizona celebrating the holidays with her family. Sources told the police that Ashley Murray and her friend were out in San Pedro and on their way home from being out in Hermosa when they were struck by Avalos.

Jossy Avalos reportedly ran a red light in Redondo Beach after having crashed into a building on the 2500 block of Pacific Coast Highway in Hermosa Beach. Avalos reportedly spent the night drinking in bars in the South Bay as well. Ashley sustained multiple bodily injuries that have left her in a state of unconsciousness since the initial crash. Her male friend who was also riding in the Uber car suffered internal and facial injuries and remains hospitalized. Murray has remained unconscious in the ICU at County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Jenna Clarke recently established a GoFundMe account for her dear friend Ashley Murray and wrote on the page that Murray had sustained “substantial brain injuries” and has already had “multiple brain surgeries to minimize lasting brain damages.” The family is hoping that she will become conscious soon because she has a bright future ahead of her. The family said Ashley Murray had plans to attend nursing school in order to become a neonatal intensive care nurse.

On Wednesday Avalos appeared before a judge in Torrance where he plead not guilty to charges including driving under the influence (DUI), causing great bodily harm and driving with a blood alcohol content over the legal limit of 0.08. He faces a possibility of 14 years in jail if charged with a DUI. His next court date is on January 11th, 2018.
